Guernsey in the time of Nero

Where is the vision for Guernsey in the 21st century?

Where is the long term plan?

Where is our Chief Minister when we need leadership and guidance?

When our Island is being assaulted by restrictive legislation from afar, by increasing competition, and by the very elements themselves, what are our leaders debating?

Whether we should trial Sunday opening.

Not scrap the legislation all together, just trial it for a month and see what happens.

Suddenly the whole fabric of Guernsey is at stake and everyone is up in arms.

And so they fiddle while the gap between the rich and the poor gets bigger, while our youngsters struggle to find somewhere to live and somewhere to work, and while public disillusion with politics and politicians skyrockets.

How ever did we get in such a mess?

Oh and by the way our sea defences continue to get weaker and weaker as the weather gets more extreme.

How about debating how to effectively protect Guernsey from the sea?

Our predecessors built substantial sea defences which have lasted for decades. A lot now need substantial repair within the next decade or so.

Wouldn’t it be a good idea to start such a long term project now and address the worst affected first?

No, that will cost money that we don’t really have just yet. Let’s leave it until it gets worse, will cost more, and we’ll have a shiny pot of fairy gold to pay for it.

Let someone else sort it out, sometime in the unspecified future.

Let’s talk about Sunday trading instead.
